Dignity in Care Day Unites Holly Lodge Care Home with Local College

February 25, 2010

Holly Lodge are big supporters of Dignity in Care Day and encouraged a local college to get involved.

The caring youngsters from Woodham Community College and Greenfield School joined residents and staff at Holly Lodge Care Home in Shildon, County Durham on Thursday 25th February in support of the Dignity in Care campaign. Holly Lodge has supported the campaign for a long time and has a number of individual champions, all with a passionate belief that being treated with dignity and respect is a human right and not something that should be questioned or need to be asked for.

A great deal of knowledge and wisdom was shared between the students and residents and a keen interest was shown by the youngsters in the different roles within the home. Senior carers Jackie Stapler and Shaun Stott helped to organise the event and were very pleased with the turn out.  Home Manager Karen Hunter  said, "It's great to see people of all ages in conversation and sharing their experiences; the event today has definately helped to bridge the generations."

The day has helped to dismiss some of the myths and negative perceptions people have about care homes and the students enjoyed their visit, commenting how great it was to see such happy residents. Messages of dignity written by residents at the home were attached to balloons that were later released (see image).

The event held at Holly was one of many events taking place that day across the UK in support of the campaign and with the continual efforts of Dignity in Care Champions such as those at Holly Lodge, there will be lots of improved care facilities across the country.
